Is Roatan Island for you?
Dear travelers, divers and potential renters,
Welcome to my blog, a place to share with you bits and pieces of what a regular day feels and looks like on Roatan, both from an Expat that lives here full time and a traveler’s point of view. I hope through these pictures and thoughts of the day, you will learn more about our beautiful Island and see for yourself why Roatan is one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean.
So let’s start with the obvious: Why Roatan?
One of the main reasons why people come to Roatan (Bay Islands, Honduras) is for the crystal waters and its marine life for diving and snorkeling, the white sandy beaches and the laid back atmosphere. This is no Cuba or Dominican Republic and… that’s what we love about it! When you land at Roatan airport, you automatically get it. Compare to the most popular destinations, Roatan is probably 15 years behind or more and that is why it is so charming. It is a third world country after all, let’s not forget it!
If you are a laid back kind of person, with a taste of discovery or adventure and wish to get the true feeling of an Island Life and its people, you will fall in love with Roatan. Do not expect limousines, high rises, huge shopping malls, a 900 room hotel, a Boston Pizza or a Wal-Mart, or wish to walk around with high heels shoes, you simply won’t find it here. What you will find and experience is wonderful and warm people going out of their way to make your stay simply unforgettable. They will welcome you to their restaurant and its Caribbean décor to taste their delicious local cuisine. You will ride on only one main curved road (paved or not) on a scooter or taxi, or enjoy the water taxi ride that will take you from West Bay Beach to West End village at only 3$ per person (or 60 Lemps). You will make friends and become pals with employees and other travelers and divers. You will have the opportunity to stay in the most beautiful, fully equipped and private vacation home rentals, villas or condos, or at a small hotel & dive resort directly located on the beach (West Bay beach, Infinity Bay, West End …) or in a remote location. You will experience the best diving of your life and amazing snorkeling or have the opportunity to just hang out with friends at a beach bar or dance late at night to the rhythm of some great local bands. Or, simply relax in your hammock and watch our gorgeous sunsets with a Monkey Lala, a cold Salva Vida or a Vino Blanco in hand.
Whether you are here on a cruise ship and making a one day stop at Mahogany Bay Port, for vacation or diving for a week or, to see if Roatan might be where you could live or retire one day, just don’t miss the opportunity to see it for yourself. Who knows, you might end up like me and move here 8 months later!
So what do you say; you want to join me and learn more?
