Helpful Roatan Travel Tips!
A few helpful tips and FAQs to get you prepared for your vacation on Roatan…
IMPORTANT: Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months minimum, from your date of arrival on Roatan.
There is a $39US exit tax/per person to pay at the airport when you leave Roatan. *Check with your airline, it might be included in your rate!
You are issued a Visa upon your arrival on Roatan. It maybe for 30, 60 or 90 days. If you are planning to stay more than 30 days, advise customs before presenting your passport. It is entirely up to them to decide. You can get extensions of 30 days maximum.
The name of our airport is Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (code: RTB) and is located in Coxen Hole, about 25 minutes to West Bay by car.
The accepted currency on Roatan are both Lempiras and US. US is accepted everywhere (not Canadian!) *Average of 23.50 Lemps per US dollar (currency rate changes without notice).
The languages spoken are both English & Spanish. Most places you will have English speaking people or, very friendly and patient Spanish ones ready to help you!
Unless you are the type of traveler that wants to discover every inch of the Island during your stay, you will not need a car full time, or at all (depends on you). You will have access to car rentals (driver’s license/credit card required), scooter rentals, taxis, water taxis and private tour guides and chauffeurs if required. You might want to plan ahead for a car or scooter rental. We will refer you to the right place.
You will have access to only a few ATM’s machine. Extra charges might apply. Credit cards are accepted at major grocery stores and some other businesses but we recommend you plan accordingly and bring extra US cash (new bills and no large bills) to be on the safe side (this is where our safes come handy).
Our major grocery stores (Eldon’s & Plaza Mar, located in Coxen Hole & French Harbour) have everything you need and more. You will find popular US brands, including Gluten Free and International foods. The liquor is also sold in our grocery stores.
We have multiple pharmacies, from the ones in our grocery stores to the ones in every village. The cost of medication is a lot less expensive than in the US and Canada, including medication that you would normally buy under prescription.
Our electrical outlets are standard: 120.
West Bay Beach and West End Beach are small beautiful beaches, that can be walked from one end to the other in a few minutes. If you choose a vacation property rental in these areas, you won’t need a car to go out and enjoy the restaurants and bars, but maybe only a flashlight!
We recommend the usage of a good insect repellent to protect yourself from the sand flies and others. Better to prevent!
The rainy season is usually in October and November, but it varies from one year to another. This doesn’t mean the sun won’t shine, because it does!
