Things to do on Roatan
While vacationing on our beautiful Island of Roatan, there are a wide variety of things to do that will suit the needs of most everyone from vacationers looking for the ultimate in a relaxing getaway to those who seek more heart pounding adventures. Here is a look at just some of those fun activities you might consider…
Diving is what Roatan is famous for – the opportunities on Roatan bring travelers from all walks of life that are looking to experience some of the greatest dives on the planet. With over 170 dive sites, you’ll have the chance to view magnificent underwater canyons and vivid coral gardens along with wrecks, deep walls and caves.
If marine life is what you’re after, our crystal clear waters provide the opportunity to swim with turtles, eels and even stingrays, nurse sharks, flounders along with a wide range of tropical fish. No matter what your experience level and diving desires, we can refer you to a diving center on Roatan that is sure to meet your needs. Learn more about Diving on Roatan right here!
You don’t have to dive to deep depths to discover the wondrous underwater world that awaits you in Roatan. Joining a boat or tour isn’t necessary to go snorkeling, just ask the friendly staff at the dive centers or most locals to point you in the right direction. You will snorkel directly from the beach on your own at any time! But if you wish to go further and to more secluded places, you’ll find a number of snorkeling tours available that will bring you to some of the best spots off the island to explore shipwrecks or even to other exotic islands.
You’ll find a wide range of deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities on Roatan Island. There are a number of dive operators that also have boats that are dedicated to fishing and we can help you in making those arrangements. If you prefer to bring your own fishing gear, there are some flats that are found just south of West Bay Beach for good fishing along the shoreline.
Paddle Boarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world; a fun, easy activity that allows you to get out and play in the water – and available on Roatan. Take a guided tour with instruction to try it out. There are options for sunset paddles or you might paddle along the island’s west end along with the turtles, eagle rays and other marine life.
Sea kayaking is another incredible open water option. Rent a kayak to explore deserted beaches and mangroves or take a guided kayak tour that includes instruction and all of the equipment you need to enjoy it. Some outfitters on Roatan offer a combination kayak/snorkel tour- a great way to enjoy both activities in the same day.
Another great option for exploring the beautiful crystal clear waters of the Caribbean is by embarking on a sailing excursion. Half-day, full-day and even longer trips can be found, with guests provided the opportunity to relax and soak in the sun and the sea while viewing dolphins and sea turtles and sailing through hidden inlets and bays.
If you’re looking for a heart-pounding adventure, kite-surfing on Roatan in the warm Caribbean waters is yet another exciting activity that can be found here. This relatively new sport is an extreme form of wind surfing, with lessons available for everyone from beginners to the most advanced.
Swimming with the dolphins
If you’ve always dreamed of swimming with the dolphins, you can even do that on our spectacular island too. Dolphin trainers educate guests about the amazing Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins and there are even opportunities to become a trainer for the day. There are a number of programs on Roatan that allow guests to interact with dolphins on their own initiative and natural curiosity that can provide an experience of a lifetime!
Although you might spend a majority of your time in or near the water, golfing is a fabulous inland activity. At The Black Pearl you’ll find a breathtaking 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course with stunning Caribbean vistas. Many have called it the best course they’ve ever played.
Road trips: Island Tours and Nature Tours
There are a number of island tours available. Visit brilliant botanical gardens filled with jungle trails; meet a playful monkey while passing flowering plants as well as a variety of fruit and nut trees, including the famed “Chocolate Tree.” Exploring an animal preserve where monkeys will jump on your shoulders and exotic birds fly through the air along with more botanical gardens, cascading falls, lush plant life and trees is yet another option.
Mangrove Tunnels Tours
A Mangrove Tunnels Tour in nearby Jonesville is a fascinating venture where you’ll find old Caribbean fishing villages constructed on stilts over the water. Here you’ll find a canal that was dug many years ago in order to link harbors and bays in the area so that small boats could commute among them without having to go into the sea. Tours are taken by dory through these tunnels for a unique glimpse into this ecosystem that is only accessible via boat. The area is teeming with wildlife including herons and other birds as well as iguanas and crabs.
A canopy tour allows visitors to glide above the jungle wilderness via Zip Line. At an incredible two miles in length you’ll enjoy breathtaking Caribbean and island views soaring across diverse vegetation from the rain forest to dry oaks. This adventure also allows for an up-close-and-personal visit with wildlife like iguanas and brightly colored birds.
A horseback ride on the beach is something that fantasies are made of, and also possible on Roatan. There are a variety of options available for everyone from the beginner to the more experienced. Ride through stunning scenery on a deserted beach, through tropical foliage or to hilltops where you’ll find awe-inspiring panoramic views of the island’s coastline, reefs and the dazzling turquoise waters.
Spas & Massages
Enjoy world-class spas as well as massage services with a number of facilities on the island providing the ultimate in relaxation for your getaway. Everything from Swedish massage and Deep Tissue massage to Reflexology, Mayan Stone massage and aromatherapy can be found on Roatan.
