3 Must Hang Outs in West End to Mingle with Locals and Get a Sense of the Community

Posted on July 17, 2013 by Christine Larose in What to do on Roatan

One of the best ways to get a true sense of the community and what it’s like to live here is to spend some time at the locals and expats favorite hang outs. After all, you probably didn’t come here to spend time with other tourists, right?

I believe visiting these three fun places will significantly enhance your experience on Roatan!

Sundowners bar

Sundowners bar in West End Roatan

Many will argue that Sundowners is the best beach bar in all of the Caribbean. Here you’ll find quintessential spectacular sunsets, picturesque white sands and a place where West End’s eclectic mix of dive instructors, locals, expats, street dogs and tourists come together to toast it all with a fantastic tropical drink or a cold beer.

During the day enjoy the soft white sand and the shallows of Half Moon Bay – wade right in with cold beer in hand to beat the heat. Watching the sun dip below the horizon here is a must. Beware of the Monkey La La’s, as this deceptively potent frozen drink is simply delicious but will sneak up on you rather suddenly!

The bar is really hopping at happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. each day with the happy hour pricing offering incredible deals on local beers and some good other stuff like rum punch or frozen margaritas! Don’t miss their delicious hamburgers or wraps either!

C Level Cafe & Bar

C LevelC Level Cafe & Bar is famous for their Martini Madness Mondays as well as their Sunday’s Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary bar where you can pour the vodka and choose your favorite ingredients. They also happen to have some of the coldest beers on the planet for those super steamy hot days when you’re craving a chilled drink.C Level Bloody Marys

When it comes to the food, the fare is ever-changing but always delicious and one of the best values on the island.

I think you’ll find owner Joe to be the friendliest on the island. He runs the place making sure that everyone who visits feels at home the moment they walk in. Right next door to the Reef Gliders dive shop, this is also a great place to enjoy good conversation with fellow scuba aficionados. Sit down, sip your drink and just start chatting with whoever happens to be around!

Tita’s Pink Flamingo

Tita's Pink Flamingo on RoatanThe Flamingo is one of those amazing hidden treasures that the more adventurous travelers love to discover. This small bar is tucked in between two resorts, hidden away from view on the main road yet offer gorgeous vistas of the second largest coral reef in the world along with the opportunity to enjoy good conversation, a nice cool breeze and a fantastic drink. This small bar has a limited staff, but everyone here is extremely friendly and will take the time to get to know what you like, serving it to you made perfectly to order.

The bar is open late and frequently offers entertaining events like Garifuna dancers and drummers, traditional games and DJs playing the best in everything from reggae to hip-hop, calypso, soca, punta, pop and more.

Be sure to come out and join us locals and expats at any one – or all – of these lively hang outs while you’re here!
